Football Australia chief James Johnson has provided a positive update on Chelsea and Matildas forward Sam Kerr as she recovers from her ACL injury.

WHAT HAPPENED?
Earlier this year, Kerr suffered a knee injury during Chelsea's winter training camp in Morroco. It was soon reported that the Australian had suffered from an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear. Seven months after her injury, Johnson has revealed that she is close to a return for the Blues.

WHAT JOHNSON SAID
Speaking to the media, Johnson said: “I’m in touch with Sam right now. She's obviously doing her rehab at the moment. She's close to getting back on the field for Chelsea and as soon as she’s available to come back into the team, we’re looking forward to welcoming Sam back in.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Last month, Kerr and Chelsea surprised fans as she signed a new contract with the club after having earlier posted a 'farewell message' to the fans. Kerr signed a two-year extension with the Blues and will now play under new boss Sonia Bompastor when she returns from injury.
